THE BODYSAFE PROGRAMME
BodySafe is a programme that has been developed for young people in order to promote healthy, respectful relationships and prevent experiences of sexual harm or violence. It is usually delivered to students in their high school health classes, and is available for year 9, 10 and 11 students. BodySafe is also available for alternative education centres and parental units.
Sexual violence rates are high amongst young people in Aotearoa New Zealand with approximately one in four girls and one in ten boys reporting that they had been touched or made to do sexual things at least once in their lifetime.
Through information and skills-based education, the BodySafe programme aims to empower young people to prevent sexual violence and provide support to those who may have already experienced it in their lives.
The BodySafe programme has been developed over a 10 – 15 year period and is a recognised and credible programme in Auckland schools and ensures care for student safety and well-being.
The BodySafe programme was externally evaluated in 2010 by Massey University, and was shown to be effective, valued by students, and of high quality. BodySafe is internally evaluated every six months to ensure effectiveness and appropriateness of delivery.
BodySafe is delivered by Rape Prevention Education, an organisation that works to prevent sexual violence in the greater Auckland area through education.
WHO IS IT FOR?
The BodySafe programme has been designed for young people in years 9, 10 and 11 in high schools. However, the BodySafe programme can be adjusted to meet the needs of the audience.
